Certain characteristics were seen as pertinent to the new ideal. By general consent, a "New Woman" was supposed to
-have received an adequate education (primary, secondary and preferably also tertiary) and to be able to use her knowledge wisely;

It was a reaction to the gender role, as characterized by the so-called Cult of Domesticity, ascribed to women in the Victorian era. Advocates of the New Woman ideal were found among novelists, playwrights, journalists, pamphleteers, political thinkers and suffragettes. Men and women who favoured the new cause gathered, for example, in the Fabian Society in the United Kingdom, a precursor of the Labour Party. The supporters' aim was to encourage women to liberate themselves from male domination, manage their lives and leave behind anything that might restrict their pursuit of happiness and self-realization. Heavily opposed by conservatives, the New Woman movement started to fade away in the course of the First World War when, due to a shortage of "manpower", many women took on jobs and when, shortly after the war, universal suffrage was achieved.

Gary Strang and Tony Smart are two modern stereotypes of 1990s men in their thirties, taking a keen interest in booze, women and football. Gary runs a dead end burglary alarms sales office, with two old-fashioned and muted assistants: subordinates George and Anthea. Tony on the other hand, stumbles through various jobs including modeling, bar work and professional miming, due to his record stall collapsing (literally). The pair are frequently engaged in second childhood; behaving immaturely and selfishly. As a result, the relationship with the two women in their lives, Dorothy and Deborah, persistently suffers.Dorothy, Gary’s girlfriend, is a quick-witted and sensible young nurse. The pair frequently split up, are occasionally unfaithful, but somehow always manage to get back together. Gary desperately clings to Dorothy, the only woman he can form a relationship with. Tony on the other hand has numerous girlfriends, however his true feelings are for the blonde “babe” upstairs, Deborah. Tony loves Deborah and spends most of his time chasing her around. He goes to extreme lengths to get her to sleep with him, however his feelings for her stretch far beyond lust. Deborah deep down feels a connection with Tony, however like Gary,a perpetual childhood prevents any relationship from forming.
